Field guide

What's in the Bag

A field guide to the muni golf bag, cradle to Coors Light. Full-page spreads with numbered callouts — starting with Dale and Tanner from Ask the Single.

What's in my bag spread for Dale: pull cart, Ping Eye 2 irons, Big Bertha driver, Fig Newtons

Dale — The 6:04 AM Walker

Retired from "logistics." Pull cart since forever. Never paid for a range bucket. One grip replaced (1984). If you join his group, he will nod once.

  • Driver: 2004 Big Bertha 10.5° — original headcover, cleaned after every round.
  • Irons: Ping Eye 2, 3–PW. Bought with a 1982 bonus. Hasn't needed the 3 yet.
  • Wedge: One. Also sand wedge, chipper, and spatula.
  • Putter: 1984 Ping. Same grip since Reagan.
  • Fuel: Coffee + Fig Newtons. "Keeps me more regular than Big Ben."
  • On the line: 14 used Pro V1s, three red dots. Every one's a keeper.

What's in my bag spread for Tanner: Ping carry bag, weathered irons, crushed Red Dog can

Tanner — The Bartender

Lettered in high school. Hasn't hit a range ball since. Shows up with no warmup, no glove, and somehow no bogeys. Always rides. Do not ask him to keep score.

  • Driver: TaylorMade 2015, 9.5° — grip worn to the cord.
  • Irons: Ping i-series, 4–PW. Graduation present. Still pure.
  • Wedges: 56° and 60°. Grooves are a rumor.
  • Putter: Scotty knockoff. Makes everything inside 6 feet, sober.
  • Essentials: Two lighters (neither his), a crushed Red Dog can of unknown tenure, a vape that doubles as an alignment stick.
